Kidney Stone Removal: Kidney stone surgery depends on the size of the stone. PCNL for large stones, RARS for medium sized stones and ESWL for small stones are considered to be the most effective surgeries. However, RARS surgery is also considered a good option to remove stones of 10 to 15 mm size.
According to urologists, kidney stone surgery is decided on the basis of the size of the stone.Best Kidney Stone Surgery: The problem of kidney stones is increasing rapidly and many youth are also falling prey to it. Kidney stones can cause problems like sudden severe pain, burning sensation during urination, bleeding in urine and frequent urine infections. Sometimes small stones come out on their own through urine, but when the stone cannot come out, then surgery is required in that condition. The biggest question in the minds of patients is which surgery is best to remove kidney stones? Let us know about this from experts.
Dr. Amarendra Pathak, Vice Chairman of Urology Department of Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi told News18. Surgery to remove kidney stones is always decided based on the size and position of the stone. Nowadays modern technologies are available, in which most surgeries are minimally invasive. Due to this the patient recovers quickly. No single surgery to remove kidney stones is best for all patients. The right surgery is decided after considering the size of the stone, its location and the overall health of the patient. Timely examination and choosing the right technique not only provides relief from pain, but also reduces the risk of future complications to a great extent.
Best Surgery Options for Kidney Stone Removal
Doctor Pathak told that if a person has a stone of 2, 3 or 4 mm in his kidney, then Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) surgery is considered the best for him. This is keyhole surgery. In this, first a catheter is inserted through the urine to reach the kidney, then medicine is given and a small keyhole is made from outside. Through this the stone is broken and taken out. After surgery, a stent is inserted, which is usually removed after 2 weeks. PCNL is considered a successful and safe technique for larger stones.
Urologist said that retrograde intrarenal surgery (RARS) is an excellent option for stones of 1 to 1.5 mm. In this technique, urine is delivered directly into the kidney through a thin pipe. There, with the help of laser, the stone is converted into fine sand. After this a stent is placed, which is removed after 2 to 3 weeks. According to the doctor, even stones of 10 to 15 mm size can be easily removed with this technique. This surgery is being given priority nowadays, because no incision or cut is made in it.
According to experts, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is used for small stones ranging from 1 to 1.2 mm. In this, without making any incision, the stone is broken into small pieces by giving shock waves from outside, which are later passed out on their own through urine. However, this technique is not suitable for every patient and every type of stone, hence the doctor does a thorough examination first.
