America’s decision to reduce the tariff on India to 18 percent has created a political stir in South Asia. With this decision, India has got an edge over Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. There is resentment especially in Pakistan, because despite all efforts to please Trump, it got a bad tariff deal from India.

After Trump came back to power, Pakistan agreed with him on every major issue. Even demanded a Nobel Peace Prize for Trump. Pakistan also accepted the claim of ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor without raising any questions. Not only this, in the case of Gaza also, Pakistan, moving closer to the American stance, agreed to send troops there and decided to join the ‘Board of Peace’. Army Chief Munir also visited America several times and agreed to give rare earth minerals.
Why are Pakistanis worried?
Despite such a biased policy, America has imposed 19 percent tariff on Pakistan, which is higher than India. Interestingly, when there was 50 percent tariff on India, Pakistan was happy that it was being taxed less than India. This was considered a reward for his friendship with Trump. But now by reducing the tariff, Trump has made it clear whom America gives priority to in South Asia. By bringing India to 18 percent, America gave the message that only relationships based on equality and respect have real meaning.
India did not nominate Trump for a Nobel prize, yet still gets better tariff deal than Pakistan. Other than the opportunity to apply extra layers of cherry blossom what has Trump actually given to Pakistan?
