ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Over time the bowlers in the T20 format have also proved their importance in this format. They are setting precedents one after the other by performing exceptionally well with the ball in the short format.
After the inception of T20 cricket in 2005, this format became the most popular among cricket lovers within a short period of time. In the beginning it was thought that T20 is only a game for batters. But with time bowlers have also proved their importance in this format. They are setting precedents one after the other by performing exceptionally well with the ball in the short format. New Zealand’s star pacer Lockie Ferguson has set such a rare record.
Lockie Ferguson made history in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match against Papua New Guinea. He did not concede a single run in his four-over spell. He did not have to digest extra runs or boundaries in any over. All four of his overs were maidens and he took three important wickets with them. This is the first time such an incredible bowling performance was seen in the main phase of T20 World Cup, which created a big shock in the cricket world.

However, such a feat was seen earlier in the T20 World Cup Qualifiers. In 2021, Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar took two wickets with a four-over maiden in a qualifier against Panama. But that was a qualifying match. Lockie Ferguson’s feat on the main stage of the World Cup therefore takes on even more significance and a special place in the record books.
In this match, the Papua New Guinea team was bowled out for just 78 runs in 19.4 overs under the influence of the New Zealand bowlers. In reply, the New Zealand team easily achieved the target and scored 79 runs in 12.2 overs and won the match by 7 wickets. Lockie Ferguson was adjudged Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling performance. His performance once again proved the power of bowlers in T20 cricket.
