Kolkata: Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq’s bowling action in his team’s second match against USA in the 2026 T20 World Cup in Colombo has been at the center of controversy. Despite that concession, the controversy came to a head again on Tuesday when Tariq took three wickets in Pakistan’s 32-run win over America, which saw them top Group A.
While much of the criticism online focused on allegations of elbow extension, veteran Indian cricketer Srivatsa Goswami questioned Tariq’s “pause” in action before ball release. Comparing it to football, Goswami argues that players are no longer allowed to pause during the penalty run-up and suggests that similar scrutiny should be applied here.
“Even football no longer allows players to pause during the penalty run-up. How is that right? Action – all good. But pause? That too while loading deliveries. This cannot seriously continue,” Goswami wrote. India legend Ravichandran Ashwin agreed with the football comparison, but argued against Goswami’s larger argument, highlighting the imbalance of cricket laws.
