International kickboxing in Siliguri!

Ritvik Bhattacharya, Siliguri : Siliguri’s daughter Shreya Basak once again flew the flag of success on the international stage. He won two medals representing India at the 5th Open India International Kickboxing Cup held at the KD Yadav Indoor Stadium in New Delhi last February 4-8.

Shreya won silver in the under 60kg senior light contact category and bronze in the kick light event. Shreya, a student of Techno India Group’s Sister Nivedita University, achieved this success by fighting with competitors from a total of 8 countries including India. This is his first international medal in kickboxing.

After international success in taekwondo and karate, he proved his skills in kickboxing. Shreya started practicing taekwondo from 2016 and achieved great success by winning gold at the 2023 Asian Championships. He started kickboxing from 2024 and won gold at the district and state levels, but had to return empty-handed after participating in two international competitions. That failure increased his stubbornness, and that stubbornness paid off on the soil of Delhi.

Shreya said, “Twice I had to come back empty-handed from the international stage. It was very bad, but I didn’t give up. I corrected my mistakes and worked harder. It feels great to win a medal for the country.”

In another statement he said, “My dream is to participate in the Kickboxing Super League (KSL) and win there. I want to raise the name of the city higher. I love sports since childhood. I urge everyone to join sports along with studies.”

But behind the success there is also a story of struggle. Father Swapan Basak is a middle-class businessman and mother Madhavi Basak is a housewife. Shreya pursues expensive sports like kickboxing within the family’s limited income. Although he managed the expenses with his own efforts and the help of his family, he regrets not getting government support. In Shreya’s words, “Even after winning so many medals, if I had got the government’s support, I could have fought for the country on a bigger stage.”
