New Delhi : Sanju Samson got a chance to play for the first time in T20 World Cup against Namibia. He scored a blistering 22 runs off just 8 balls. His short but explosive innings has caused disagreements among fans and cricket analysts. According to some, Samson did exactly what the team management wanted him to do — score quick runs. According to others, he could not make full use of the golden opportunity he got.

Samson’s chance came in this match as opener Abhishek Sharma fell ill before the match. After a poor performance in the five-match T20I series against South Africa, Samson fell behind left-handed batsman Ishan Kishan. Hence it was an important opportunity for him to prove himself for the future.

Sanju Samson started the innings without any pressure. He hit a great six off the first ball. Ben followed this up with two more sixes and a four against Shikongo for 21 off just 7 balls at a strike rate of 300. However, a slow ball aimed at Shikongo’s stumps in the last ball of the second over of the innings confused him and he was caught at deep mid-wicket.

From the point of view of T20 innings, Samson’s innings can be said to be positive. He played very few balls, did not waste the ball. Abhishek won a lot of praise in the 2025 Asia Cup by playing just such an innings. Perhaps the team management also instructed Samson to play the same way.
