Generally, people ignore many plants growing in fields and forests considering them as weeds, but in Ayurveda these plants work as medicines. One such weed is Apamarg, which is known as Chirchita or Latjira in many areas. This plant is easily found on roadsides, forests and vacant lands. According to Ayurveda, brushing teeth made with a branch of Apamarg is considered very beneficial for teeth and gums.

In fact, while talking to Local 18, Dr. Smita Srivastava (BAMS Lucknow University), Medical Officer in-charge of Government AYUSH Hospital, Shivgarh in Rae Bareli district, says that natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties are found in Apamarg. Brushing your teeth with it early in the morning eliminates the harmful bacteria present in the mouth, which reduces the problems of tooth decay and cavity. This is the reason why in ancient times people used to use toothbrush instead of toothpaste.

Apamarg Datun also helps in strengthening the gums. This datun is considered very beneficial for those people who suffer from bleeding, swelling or pain in the gums. By brushing datun regularly, blood circulation in the gums improves and gradually the weakness of the gums starts going away.

The problem of bad breath i.e. bad breath has become common nowadays. According to Ayurvedic beliefs, Apamarg Datun is effective in cleaning the mouth as well as removing bad smell. Its astringent nature cleans the dirt accumulated on the tongue and teeth, making the mouth feel fresh for a long time.

Apart from this, Apamarg Datun is also considered helpful in reducing the yellowness of teeth. The natural elements present in it help in gradually removing the layer accumulated on the teeth, due to which the teeth appear clean and shiny.

In the morning on an empty stomach, take a fresh and clean branch of Apamarg. Chew one end lightly, make it like a brush and rub it slowly on the teeth and gums. After brushing teeth for 5 to 10 minutes, rinse the mouth thoroughly with clean water.

Dr. Smita Srivastava says that before using any wild plant, its correct identification is necessary. With proper and regular use, this simple looking weed can prove to be very beneficial for dental health.
