Eye cancer treatment news: Indian doctors and indigenous products prepared in India are the best, this has been proved by the doctors of Max Saket. The doctors here have not only removed a rare tumor from the eye of a patient who came from Iraq, but the vision in both his eyes has also remained intact. It is a unique example of efficient Indian healthcare that despite removal of cancer from the eye, eyesight was not affected.

Let us tell you that a 41 year old patient living in Iraq started having some trouble seeing in his right eye for the last six months. At first he considered it to be a normal eye problem but gradually the problem started increasing so he came to India for expert medical care. A detailed examination conducted at Max Super Specialty Hospital Saket here revealed that there was a 9.5 by 13.5 mm large tumor in his eye. It was about the size of a small pea. It was actually choroidal melanoma, a rare and deadly type of eye cancer. The biggest thing is that if timely treatment is not received, it could spread to the entire eye.

The doctors at the hospital decided to use plaque brachytherapy to treat the patient and the ophthalmology team led by Dr. Anita Sethi, HOD and Principal Director of Ophthalmology, performed the surgery. Dr. Dodul Mandal, Senior Director of Radiation Oncology also contributed in this. This is an advanced radiation treatment in the field of eye treatment, in which radioactive plaques are delivered directly to the tumor. This made it easier for doctors to target cancer cells while causing minimal damage to surrounding cells, whereas some other therapies require the removal of the entire affected eye.

The most special thing about this treatment was that the doctors used the indigenously developed Ruthenium-106 plaque, which has been prepared by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. This provided a cost-effective solution compared to imported alternatives. The patient was then kept in the hospital until the required dose of radiation was received and the plaque was removed. With the help of this therapy, the patient’s tumor was not only removed but it also helped in maintaining the vision in both his eyes.

regarding this case Dr. Anita Sethi Said, ‘Many patients fear that being diagnosed with eye cancer means they will lose their eyesight. Our goal in this case was to effectively remove the tumor while preserving the patient’s eyesight. Timely diagnosis helped us choose appropriate treatment and provide quality life to the patient. This case shows how timely multidisciplinary planning can save eyesight even in complex cases of eye cancer.

There itself Dr. Dodul Mandal Said, ‘Radiotherapy has become a medium to provide precise and personalized treatment to everyone in today’s time. In plaque brachytherapy, the radiation source is placed directly near the tumor, due to which very little radiation reaches healthy parts of the eye and the risk of unnecessary damage is reduced.

This case shows how precise and multidisciplinary care can achieve excellent outcomes even in complex cases of eye cancer. Let us tell you that only a few selected hospitals in India provide this treatment. Due to easy access to advanced technology, with the help of such approach, eye cancer can be treated in India and vision can also be maintained.
