Holi Tips: Holi is a festival of joy and colors, but the chemicals present in many synthetic colors can silently harm your scalp and hair. If not taken proper care, these colors can weaken the hair roots, spoil the health of the scalp and lead to dryness, irritation, and even hair fall. Holi colors often contain strong chemicals which can have a negative impact on the health of the scalp, says Mumbai-based dermatologist Dr Sharifa Chausse. These chemicals can cause scalp irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. According to him, frequent or prolonged exposure to chemical colors can weaken the natural protection of the head.
You may notice dryness, itching, redness or dandruff-like layers on the scalp. Sometimes small wounds or swelling may also occur. When the protection of the scalp becomes weak, the risk of infection and hair weakness increases, which can lead to hair fall. Allergy is also a matter of concern. Many people do not know that they are allergic to a coloring substance until they feel itching, burning or discomfort. Dr. Chausse advises to take precautions to reduce the risk.
cover your head while playing holi
Covering the head while playing Holi and using natural or home-made colors can reduce the harm to a great extent. Hair protection is important so that no major problems arise in the future. Many people make such mistakes while washing hair after Holi which causes further damage to the hair. The most common mistake is washing hair with very hot water immediately after Holi. Hot water strips the scalp of its natural oils, making the scalp dry and making the colors stick more.
Do not wash hair with strong shampoo frequently
The second mistake is washing hair frequently with strong shampoo. Due to this, the natural oil of the head gets removed and the hair becomes dry, lifeless and weak. Not applying oil before washing hair also makes it difficult to remove color. Applying oil before washing loosens the color particles and forms a protective layer on the hair. Rubbing hair vigorously also causes damage.
Rubbing the hair vigorously to remove color can cause hair breakage and weakening of the roots. Always wash gently, use mild shampoo and restore moisture with a good conditioner. There are many myths regarding hair fall after Holi. Dr. Chausse says that many problems are based on misunderstandings.
Myth 1: Hair fall after festivals is permanent. In fact, dryness, product build-up or incorrect hair washing can cause temporary hair loss, but with proper care, washing, conditioning and expert advice, hair health can be restored.
Myth 2: Washing hair frequently removes the damage. Washing repeatedly increases the damage. Due to this, essential oils are removed and the hair becomes more weak. Washing gently with mild shampoo is enough.
Myth 3: Applying too much oil stops hair fall. Applying oil cures dryness and frizzy hair, but it is not a cure for hair fall. Head health and proper hair care are more important. Dr. Chausse says that prevention and gentle care is most important. Holi should be a time for celebration, not worry about hair loss. By protecting your head, avoiding harsh colors and proper care, you can enjoy the festival without spoiling the health of your hair.
