Kidney Cancer Symptoms: Blood in urine is a sign of many serious health problems. Usually this is a symptom of urine infection or removal of kidney stones. If the problem persists, it can be a major sign of cancer. A 48 year old man from Delhi kept having blood in his urine for about 2 years. Sometimes suddenly there is blood in urine, then it stops after taking medicine. He did not have any kind of pain, fever or any other problem. This was the reason why he kept ignoring this problem for 2 years. Eventually, urination started stopping along with bleeding. Then he got himself examined. After examination, the doctors said that a large tumor had developed in the man’s right kidney.

According to TOI report When the young man was diagnosed with a tumor in his kidney, the doctors referred him to Delhi AIIMS. When AIIMS doctors did a scan, it was found that the cancer had spread from the kidney to the inferior vena cava (IVC). This is the main vein that carries blood from the lower part of the body to the heart. In such a situation, the doctors decided to perform surgery. Experts said that kidney cancer accounts for about 2 to 3% of the total cancer cases, but in 4 to 10% of the cases it can spread to large veins, which makes it very complicated to perform surgery on the patient. The same situation had arisen in this case also.

Professor B Nayak, Department of Urology, AIIMS, said that when the tumor enters the IVC, the operation becomes extremely challenging. In some cases it can also move towards the heart. The tumor of a 48-year-old patient from Delhi was about 8 to 9 centimeters. The special thing is that the patient had a past history of polio and is also physically handicapped. She was experiencing hematuria i.e. blood in urine without any pain, which should never be taken lightly. Usually, in such cases, open surgery is done through a large incision and cardiovascular support is required. However, in this case the surgical team adopted minimally invasive method using robotic technology.

In this procedure, along with the kidney tumor, the tumor thrombus spread in the vein was also removed. Professor Rajiv Kumar, member of the surgical team, said that robotic technology makes complex surgeries possible with fewer incisions and in some selected cases it can prove beneficial. Open surgery is still the standard treatment for most tumor thrombus cases, but minimally invasive techniques may speed recovery in some patients. The surgery performed three weeks ago was successful and the histopathology report confirmed clear cell renal carcinoma.

Dr. Amlesh Seth, Head Professor of Urology Department of AIIMS, says that if the cancer has not spread to other organs and is completely removed, then even in advanced stage there can be a survival rate of 5 years. After proper surgery, in about 50 to 70% cases the patient can survive for 5 years. Doctors have clearly said that frequent and continuous bleeding in urine is never a normal symptom. This can also be a sign of some serious disease. Timely investigation and doctor’s advice can save your life. There should not be any carelessness regarding this.
