Batting first at the Narendra Modi Stadium, India scored 255 for 5 in 20 overs. In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs. This victory made history by winning the T20 World Cup twice in a row. At the same time, it was the first time a team won the T20 World Cup at home.
This win made Suryakumar Yadav the third Indian captain to win the T20 World Cup. Earlier this feat was achieved by MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. India won the T20 World Cup for the first time under Dhoni’s leadership in 2007. India defeated Pakistan by 5 runs in that final. Later in 2024, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India won this title for the second time.
With this victory in 2026, Suryakumar Yadav achieved another special achievement. He became only the second cricketer in the world to win the T20 World Cup in both the roles of player and captain. Earlier Rohit Sharma achieved this feat. Rohit won the World Cup as a player in 2007 and as a captain in 2024. Suryakumar was a member of the 2024 World Cup winning Indian team and this time won the trophy as captain.
With this victory, some Indian cricketers achieved the feat of winning the T20 World Cup for the second time. They include Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Akshar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. All of them have won this title twice for India.
In all, Suryakumar Yadav became the ninth captain in the world to win the T20 World Cup. MS Dhoni, Younis Khan, Paul Collingwood, Lasith Malinga, Aaron Finch, Jos Buttler, Darren Sammy, Rohit Sharma have won this title as captain before. However, Darren Sammy is the only captain to have won the T20 World Cup twice.
