There was no shortage of talent. He became India’s captain at the age of 26. He used to open for the national team. The dream was to go far. But a bouncer ended everything. Salil Samadhi is the dream of all. Even if you survive, your career ends. We are talking about India’s former opening batter and India’s former captain Nori Contractor.
His full name is Nariman Jamshedji Nori Contractor. This cricketer was born on 7 March 1934 in Godhra. At that time this area was part of Bombay Presidency. He had an interest in cricket from his childhood and later played domestic cricket for Gujarat and got a chance in the national team. Norrie Contractor made his international debut on 2 December 1955 in a Test match against New Zealand
He mainly played Test cricket. In no time he became an important member of the team. He was also given the captaincy of the Indian team at the age of 26. The team was progressing well under his leadership and his individual performance was also remarkable. But a terrible accident during the West Indies tour in 1962 turned his life and career upside down.

A bouncer ball from Caribbean pacer Charlie Griffith hit him on the head during a test match in Kingston. The injury was so severe that he was unconscious for six days and bled profusely. Then Indian and West Indies players helped him with blood. Doctors put a metal plate on his head to save his life. He survived but never returned to the cricket field due to that injury.
Despite his short career, Nori Contractor has left an imprint of his talent. Between 1955 and 1962 he scored 1,611 runs in 52 innings in 31 Test matches with 1 century and 11 fifties. Besides, he scored 8,611 runs in first class cricket in 138 matches with 22 centuries. In recognition of his contribution to cricket in 2007, he was awarded C. K. Naidu was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
