It is normal to feel thirsty after extreme heat or hard work, but if you feel thirsty again and again without any reason and do not get relief even after drinking water repeatedly, then it can be a sign of some disease in the body. Doctors call this condition polydipsia, in which a person feels excessively thirsty. Sometimes sodium deficiency in the body can also be responsible for this. It has nothing to do with kidney, liver or thyroid.
According to WebMd report, sodium is an essential electrolyte for the body which plays an important role in maintaining water balance in the body, controlling the functioning of nerves and muscle activity. When the sodium level in the body decreases, the body gives frequent thirst signals to maintain water balance. For this reason the person starts feeling more thirsty than normal.
According to doctors, when the sodium level in the body decreases, the electrolyte balance of the body gets disturbed. This condition is called hyponatremia. In this, the balance of body fluids gets disturbed, due to which the person may feel thirsty again and again. Sometimes this problem also occurs when a person drinks too much water but does not get enough salt or electrolytes in the body. In such a situation, the body itself tries to create balance by giving signals of thirst.
Other symptoms of sodium deficiency
Sodium deficiency is not limited only to increased thirst, but many other symptoms can also appear along with it. These may include headache, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea and sometimes even confusion. In serious cases, this problem can also affect the brain. Therefore, if a person is constantly feeling excessively thirsty and along with it these symptoms also appear, then it may be necessary to consult a doctor.
Which people have this problem more?
According to health experts, the problem of sodium deficiency is more common in people who sweat excessively, like athletes or people who do heavy physical work. Apart from this, some medicines, kidney problems, hormonal imbalance or drinking too much water can also cause sodium deficiency in the body. In summer, due to continuous sweating, sodium gets released from the body, due to which one starts feeling more thirsty.
