Kolkata: Iran’s sports minister has announced that they will not participate in the World Cup following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a US strike during the current conflict with Israel. After this announcement, the Iranian football team cannot participate in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmed Doniamali said on state television that the national team would not be able to participate in the tournament under the current circumstances. The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and all of Iran’s group stage matches were to be played in different cities in the Americas.
Doniyamali’s quote appeared on state TV with Reuters information There they claimed “This corrupt government (US) has killed our leader, so under no circumstances can we participate in the World Cup.” Iran’s decision to withdraw came hours after FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Donald Trump and confirmed that the United States had no problem with Iran participating in the tournament.

Iran has officially withdrawn from the FIFA World Cup, so a team from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will likely replace them. Two teams are currently under discussion – the United Arab Emirates and Iraq. Although the UAE’s prospects are entirely dependent on Iran’s withdrawal, the UAE could be the first alternative to Iran as the region’s second-highest-ranking party after Iraq, even if Iran does not withdraw. Meanwhile, Iraq has an inter-confederation play-off match against the winner of the Bolivia vs Suriname semi-final. If Iraq win the play-offs, they will qualify directly. Otherwise, they will likely enter the tournament as substitutes for Iran as they are ahead of the UAE.
