Sunil Gavaskar: Sunil Gavaskar single handedly took Sunrisers Leeds. Why the Pakistani spinner was taken in the Indian franchise! He raised the question.
Kolkata: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is furious with the Sunrisers management. He hit back at Sunrisers Leeds for signing Pakistani spinner Abrar Ahmed in The Hundred auction.
Sunrisers Leeds, co-owned by Kabya Maran, signed Abrar Ahmed for £1,90,000, which is around Rs 2.3 crore in Indian rupees. However, this decision has caused a strong reaction on social media. The question arises, why Sunrisers Leeds chose a Pakistani player! Especially in view of what happened in Pahelgaon last year.
According to Gavaskar, Pakistani cricketers were temporarily banned from the Indian Premier League after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Eleven years later, the 2019 Pulwama attack reminded yet again why Indian cricket has stayed away from Pakistan. The money spent on a Pakistani cricketer would almost certainly be at the expense of the citizens of India.
Gavaskar said, “The Indian owner’s decision to buy Pakistani cricketers is surprising. From the money given to Pakistani cricketers, they will pay taxes to their own country. Guns will be bought with that tax money. It will kill Indian soldiers and common people. That is, buying Pakistani cricketers will indirectly harm the country. That’s what Sunrisers did.”
