Jalandhar lives in the heart: While talking to Imran Khan we were surprised to know so much about his ancestral home Jalandhar. He said, “Jalandhar is a historical city of Punjab. There are several settlements in different parts of Jalandhar, including ‘Slum No. 9’. Basti No. 9 probably derives its name from the local numerical naming convention, which is seen in many settlements in Jalandhar, such as Basti Sheikh, Basti Gujan, Basti Danishmandan etc. The word ‘nao’ means ‘ninth’ in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi languages. Imran Khan was a history student at Oxford University, so his interest in history was natural. “The history of Jalandhar is believed to be more than 7,000 years old, as evidenced by the remains of the Indus Civilization,” he explained.
