Ind vs NZ: Big warning before India vs New Zealand final from Kiwi skipper…
KOLKATA: Mitchell Santner said the New Zealand national cricket team is comfortable accepting the underdog berth as they prepare to face hosts India in the final of the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup on Sunday.
For Santner, the choice is simple. “I wouldn’t mind winning the trophy,” Santner told a packed press conference at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday on the eve of the final. “You look at this team and past teams, and we’re pretty consistent in our thinking. We try not to be ruled by the situation or the opponent. We just go out there and do our job as a unit,” he said.
“It’s no exception this time. Everyone knows we’re probably not favourites, but we don’t mind that. If we do the little things well and put in a strong team performance, that can put us in a good position to lift the trophy. But yes, I don’t mind breaking some hearts to do that,” he added.

After Australia captain Pat Cummins’ famous “shut up the crowd” echoed around the stadium in 2023, Santner believes handling the atmosphere will once again be important. “I think that’s the goal — to silence the crowd,” Santner said.
“There is a lot of variability in T20 cricket. It is volatile at times. We have seen throughout this World Cup that teams are very evenly matched. Often small moments change the outcome,” he added.
