Kolkata: The Pakistan government on Sunday evening announced that its national team will participate in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but will not play a match against India. The boycott was decided less than two weeks before the scheduled match, which has since sparked major controversy.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had earlier threatened to boycott the entire tournament. They spoke of standing with Bangladesh in protest against the decision to exclude Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup due to its refusal to play on Indian soil.
A recent report indicates, India vs Pakistan Their stance on the match may change very soon. If so, can Pakistan change its stance on India-Pakistan match boycott?
According to a PTI (news agency) source monitoring the Pakistan cricket situation, the PCB chief and Pakistan’s home minister Mohsin Naqvi Mainly standing by Bangladesh to gain political advantage. Even after the election in Bangladesh, he can withdraw from this decision.
Sources said, “Naqvi is more of a politician than a cricket administrator. He is not particularly concerned about the welfare of the national team. He is looking to make political gains out of it and can easily switch positions once the elections are over on February 12.”
The source added, “With two days left before the match against India, the situation could change. Otherwise, he knows, Pakistan could be left alone.”
Notably, this is not the first time that Mohsin Naqvi’s name has been mentioned in the India-Pakistan controversy. After winning the Asia Cup in 2025 against Pakistan, India refused to take the trophy from Naqvi’s hands. Naqvi was also the head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) at the time.
After the Indian cricketers refused to take the trophy from him, Naqvi left the stadium with the trophy. It is to be noted that even during Operation Sindur in May last year, Pakistan did not say that it would not play against India. Instead, the India-Pakistan match was played at a neutral venue. Government of India did not prevent it.
