Death is one of the most mysterious events of human life. Everyone knows that death is inevitable, but the way people die varies. The death of some people is so silent that the people around them cannot even understand how their life ended in a minute or two. Whereas some people die with prolonged pain, struggle for breath and physical struggle.
– Famous scientist Michael Faraday is considered as a saint. His death was very peaceful. On 25 August 1867, he died while sitting in an armchair in his home in London. Neither any long illness nor any problem.
– Devotees believe about Ramakrishna Paramhansa that he left his body peacefully remembering God. The same is said about Ramanna Maharishi, who according to devotees died in a peaceful spiritual state.
– America’s third President Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826 at his home Monticello. In his last moments, he died while lying peacefully on his bed.
– Former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam also died suddenly. He was giving a lecture to students in Shillong when he collapsed on the stage. He died on the way to the hospital. This was a case of sudden cardiac arrest.
– Alexander the Great did not die suddenly. He struggled with high fever and weakness for about 10-12 days. Gradually his body became weak. Ultimately he died in Babylon.
– Former US President Ulysses Grant died of throat cancer. In his last months he had great difficulty in speaking and eating. This disease was considered very painful at that time.
– Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, suffered from oral cancer for a long time. The pain increased so much that the doctor finally gave him a peaceful death by giving him morphine. This is considered an example of palliative sedation in today’s context.
– Soviet leader Stalin had a brain stroke. He remained lying in the room for several hours because no one had the courage to enter his room. By the time treatment was done later, it was too late. He died after several days of physical suffering.
Apart from history, there are thousands of such examples in medical literature where
– People die while sleeping
– Fall suddenly while eating
– Heart stops suddenly while walking or working
Why does this happen
Such deaths appear very peaceful from outside because the person becomes unconscious within a few seconds or minutes. Then his life is gone. But some people continue to suffer for months or even days, and then somehow they die. Why is it that some deaths look very peaceful and some look very painful?
Is such death a matter of fate or circumstances, or does science provide a clear reason for it? Research on modern medicine and palliative care shows that the experience of death depends primarily on three things—the disease or cause, the body’s biological response, and the conditions of treatment or care.
Science gives reason
Many times the heart stops suddenly. The person becomes unconscious within a few seconds or minutes. This type of death often occurs very quickly. In many cases the person does not get time to feel much pain. In these situations the brain stops getting oxygen. the person may faint quickly
But for people suffering from cancer, lung disease and neurological diseases, the death experience is longer and more painful. According to medical literature, at the time of death the body’s blood circulation slows down and the organs receive less oxygen. Gradually consciousness disappears. Many people fall asleep or become unconscious during this process, so the last moments appear calm.
Many medical case-studies have recorded instances where a person was fully active till a few minutes ago and suddenly collapses. He died. Of course, science gives many reasons for this but it could never explain why this happened.
there is no answer to this
Scientists have also noted an interesting phenomenon related to death, which is called terminal mortality. Some patients, especially those suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, suddenly start thinking normally and clearly a few days or hours before death, talk to family, share memories and then die some time later. Science has not been able to clarify this reason till now.
Research also shows that the experience of the last moments does not depend only on the body but also on these things.
– Is the person alone or with a family?
– In hospital or at home
– Pain control system
– religious or spiritual beliefs
Many studies show that people who receive emotional and medical support have a relatively peaceful death. By the way, it is also said that before death, some special chemicals are released from the brain.
Is peaceful death related to sin and virtue
However, in Indian society, peaceful death is often considered the result of virtue. These are often called “happy death” or “sadgati”. There are examples in many religious stories where sages and saints leave their bodies while meditating or in a calm state. Well, the concept of good death and bad death has always been prevalent in every religion. To be honest, this is also a mystery about which no one knows anything.
Even science has no answers to some questions.
Science certainly understands how the body closes, but some questions are still not clear to it. As
– Why do some people die absolutely peacefully?
– Why do some people struggle with their last breaths?
– Why do some people feel unusual peace or consciousness before death?
– Why do some patients suddenly become completely clear before they die?
What happens in the brain then – this is also a subject of research.
In recent years, neuroscience has also discovered that abnormal activity can occur in the brain just before death. A neurological study in 2022 found that just before death, there may be increased activity of gamma waves in the brain, which are usually associated with awareness and memory.
