An unexpected problem has surfaced at the Winter Olympics held in Italy. The free condoms at the Athlete Village ran out within days. Organizers initially kept about 10,000 packets, but due to rapid demand, they sold out in 3 days. Later they informed that fresh condoms are being brought and will be distributed during the competition.

This year the Winter Olympics Village is located in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Around 2,900 contestants stay together here. Players spend time in a close environment with temporary housing and shared common areas. According to organizers, about 9,700 condoms were initially stocked, but as demand far exceeded expectations, shortages quickly emerged.

Offering condoms at the Olympics is not new; It is a multi-year health-awareness initiative. This system is put in place to encourage safe behavior by the players. For example, around 200,000 female condoms and 200,000 male condoms were placed at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, which is much more. So this time’s low supply is particularly eye-catching.

Prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, strict rules were in place due to the pandemic and players were asked to maintain social distancing. Now those restrictions are gone and the normal environment is back. As a result, the organizers think that it is normal for the demand to increase in the Milan-Cortina event. But it is surprising that 10,000 condoms run out in 3 days.
