New York: A senior US lawmaker has said that President Donald Trump is looking for an excuse to impose ‘excessive tariffs’ on India for buying oil from Russia and has appealed to Trump to immediately withdraw this policy. MP Brad Sherman wrote on social media on Wednesday, ‘President Trump is looking for an excuse to impose very high tariffs on India.’ Sherman, a senior member of the Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives, said that Trump claims that duty was imposed on India for the import of Russian oil.

What did you say about India buying oil?

He said, ‘Hungary imports 90 percent of its crude oil from Russia but there is no duty on it. China is Russia’s biggest oil buyer, sanctions have not been imposed on it related to the purchase of Russian oil, although action has been taken on it for other reasons. Sherman said, ‘India takes only 21 percent of its crude oil from Russia but our ally was targeted. The President should change this policy immediately. America and India had announced earlier this month that an interim agreement related to trade has been reached between them.

Tariff removed from India

Along with this, Trump issued an order removing 25 percent punitive duty imposed on India on purchasing oil from Russia. US President Trump mentioned India’s decision to stop importing oil directly or indirectly from Russia and buy American energy products. Under this trade agreement, America will reduce the duty rate on India from 25 percent to 18 percent. In fact, America alleges that the sale of Russian oil helps Putin fight the war. However, it has become clear that America itself fulfills its energy needs from Russia.
