Incidentally, it has been reported that earthquakes occurred in several districts of South Bengal including Kolkata on Friday. Some districts of North Bengal also felt the earthquake yesterday, Thursday, and on Friday, a mild earthquake was felt in North Bengal. An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale occurred on Thursday, with more intensity on Friday.

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported on Friday. The source of the earthquake is said to be near Khulna, 90 km from Kolkata. The USGS said the epicenter was 26 km southeast of Taki, West Bengal. The earthquake struck at 1:22 PM IST at a depth of 9.8 km, at latitude and longitude 22.451°N and 89.139°E.

The source is about 35 km below sea level. According to the Meteorological Department, the earthquake lasted for about 52 seconds. Locals claim that a house in Kolkata shook due to the earthquake. Residents came down from the multi-storeys. It is reported that the earthquake started at 1:52 PM. Common people became frightened due to regular earthquakes, earthquake occurred in Kolkata on Thursday. But the earthquake was felt not only in Kolkata but also in the district.
