Mumbai: The Indian cricket team snatched victory by an innings in the only Test against Afghanistan. And one of the architects of that victory was Manav Suthar. The 23-year-old spinner got the chance to play international cricket for the first time. And Abhishek took 7 wickets in the match. This spinner from Rajasthan got a chance to play in county cricket. Manav Suthar has signed a short-term deal with Warwickshire. Manav will be seen playing in the next two rounds for the team in the current county championship.
Manav got a wicket in the first over on his Test debut against Afghanistan. Then he took 6 wickets at the end of the first innings. Manav took another wicket in the second innings. Manav Suthar got a chance in the national team as a reward for his consistent performance in first-class cricket in the Rajasthan jersey. He took 129 wickets in 29 matches for Rajasthan in domestic cricket.
On Manav’s inclusion in the squad, Warwickshire performance director James Thomas said, ‘We’ve played some good red-ball matches recently. The team is in great shape. We are excited to welcome Manav. Manav will bring new variety to our bowling attack for sure.’
Manav said, ‘I got the opportunity to play county cricket for the first time. I want to give my best. I will play two matches for them there. Very excited to be joining Warwickshire.’
Manav Suthar became the 10th Indian bowler to take five wickets on his debut innings in Test cricket. In 1988, Narendra Hirwani took five wickets in an innings on Test debut against the West Indies. His spell was 61/8. Which is till now the best spell by an Indian in Test debut. This time Manav Suthar is on the second place in that list. He took 6 wickets for 33 runs. Syed Abed Ali took 6 wickets for 57 runs against Australia in the first Test of his career in 1967. Dilip Joshi took 6 wickets for 103 runs against Australia in 1979. In 1961, Bhaman Kumar took 5 wickets for 64 runs in his debut Test.
After the arrival of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, Indian cricket may have got an orthodox spinner of the classical genre again. Now to see how Manav performs in the county.
