Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering some major changes. Several major decisions may be taken keeping in mind the future of the three formats of cricket. It is reported that the ICC Annual General Meeting (AGM) may be held in Edinburgh, Scotland between July 8 and 11 under the chairmanship of Jai Shah, where the launch of another league like the Indian Premier League (IPL) may also be discussed. What is the ICC’s plan for the new league?

According to a report by The Guardian, the World Club Championship may be introduced for T20 franchises playing around the world. It will be much like the league, like the Champions T20 League played between 2009 and 2014, where T20 franchises from different countries would participate.

The Champions League was jointly organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia and the South African Cricket Board. The league was not very successful, which led to its disbanding after 6 seasons.

Now plans are being made to start such a league again. For now all these plans are in preliminary stage. There is no official information about this yet. It is certain that the meeting will be attended by representatives of the 12 full member countries of cricket. From this the possibility must be inferred that such a league could be effected with the consent of all.

Deadlines for all formats

The meeting may also discuss that a specific time frame will be fixed for the three formats. For example, ODI cricket will only be played for 18 months before the ODI World Cup begins. The rest of the schedule will be reserved for Test and T20 cricket. Also, there may be discussions about shortening the one-day format, so that the format becomes more suitable over time. For now, official information on all matters is awaited.
