Chennai: A chapter of 18 long years has come to an end. Chennai Super Kings and head coach By Stephen Fleming An 18-year relationship is breaking up.
The IPL franchise issued this information in an official statement on Monday. Both parties have decided to end this partnership by mutual consent. Chennai Super Kings last won the IPL title in 2023. The team then failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons. Stephen Fleming’s future has been in question for the past few seasons due to a series of poor performances. Finally the franchise decided to part ways with the former New Zealand captain.
CSK issued a statement
Chennai Super Kings said in their official statement, ‘The Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to part ways by mutual consent, ending one of the most successful and longest partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League.’

The franchise further said, ‘After several open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management, this decision has been taken with mutual respect and gratitude.’
Stephen Fleming joined Chennai Super Kings as a player in the first season of IPL (2008). Then in 2009, he took over as the head coach of the team. Over the next 17 years under his leadership, the CSK franchise established itself as one of the most successful and respected teams in cricket. Chennai Super Kings won 5 IPL titles and 2 Champions League T20 trophies during Fleming’s tenure. The team has made the playoffs 12 times, 10 times IPLHe also played the final.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath praised Fleming’s contribution after announcing his departure. He said, ‘Stephen Fleming has been the heart of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For almost two decades he has been instrumental in shaping our identity, our vision and culture of excellence.’
He further said, ‘On behalf of the Super Kings franchise, we express our sincere appreciation for his dedication, passion and leadership. Although we are now ending our company on the field, he will always be an integral part of our heritage.’
KS Viswanathan, managing director of the franchise, said, ‘From the beginning of this journey, Fleming has not only defined the way we play, but also our identity as a franchise. He has instilled a culture of consistency, humility and always putting the team first. His greatest attributes were his understanding of the players and his ability to get the best performance out of everyone.’ He also said, ‘His influence was not limited to the field. We are proud to have been a part of such a wonderful journey with him.’
On leaving the franchise, Fleming said, ’18 years in the game is a lifetime and I’m leaving with nothing but gratitude. The time spent with Chennai Super Kings was the greatest blessing of my coaching career. Together we have achieved many memorable victories, faced difficult times and created memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart and I will continue to support this team for years to come.’
