The National Sports Act will be adopted by June 30.
After that Nishith talked about increasing the monetary reward. Said, ‘Prize money will be increased to encourage athletes to do better on the international stage. Talked to the Chief Minister about this. Earlier, if someone won gold in the Olympics, he was given a prize money of only 25 lakhs. We have proposed to increase it to Rs 8 crore. The prize money for the silver winners has been increased from Tk 15 lakh to Tk 6 crore. I have proposed to increase the prize money of bronze winners from 10 lakhs to 4 crores.
Nishith also said, ‘In the Asian Games, I have proposed to increase the prize money of seven and a half lakh rupees to 5 crore rupees for gold winners, 4 crore rupees for silver winners and 2 crore rupees for bronze winners. I have proposed to increase the prize money of gold, silver and bronze winners in Commonwealth Games from 5 lakh, 3 lakh and 2 lakh to 1.5 crore, 75 lakh and 50 lakh. So far there was no financial reward from the state for the World Championship. We have offered a prize money of Rs 2 crore to gold winners, Rs 1.5 crore to silver winners and Rs 1 crore to bronze winners. There was very little prize money in the case of the National Games. From this time I have offered to pay 7, 6 and 5 lakh rupees.
Besides, the sports minister has announced government jobs for the medal winners. He said that the rank will be fixed according to the educational qualification. Sports Advisory Committee will be formed. Nishith said, ‘I am going to organize a sports festival across Bengal. A data bank of talented players will be created from marginal places. Training is being arranged. One skating ring each in North Bengal and South Bengal will be constructed soon. 100 talented swimmers will be brought under the TOP scheme. I have proposed to renovate the old indoor stadiums.’
The sports minister said that the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium in Kolkata will be equipped with an Olympic-quality athletics track.
